Indoor Shooting Range Bookkeeping: Splitting Lane Rental, Membership, and Retail Ammo Revenue, and Costing the Compliance Overhead Most Range Owners Underprice

A lane that rents at $25 per hour, a membership at $50 per month, and a box of 9mm at $22 all run through the same POS and into one revenue account — and the owner wonders why the range looks profitable but the retail is breakeven.

Three Revenue Splits

Lane rental: Hourly, recognized at use. Prepaid lane packages are deferred revenue until redeemed.

Membership: Monthly fee recognized ratably: Dr Cash $50 / Cr Deferred Revenue $50 at receipt, Dr Deferred Revenue $50 / Cr Revenue — Membership $50 per month, with an allocation for included lane hours.

Retail ammo and firearms: Sale of tangible goods with COGS. Ammo has a high cost and regulatory tracking; lane rental has almost no COGS but high compliance cost.

Keep them as Revenue — Lane Rental, Revenue — Membership, Revenue — Retail — Ammo with matching COGS. The blended margin hides whether the lanes subsidize the retail or the reverse.

Compliance Overhead Most Owners Underprice

An indoor range pays for ventilation and lead abatement, range safety officer time, ATF compliance, insurance, and background check systems. Allocate compliance cost per lane-hour, not per month flat.

A $4,000 monthly compliance cost over 800 lane-hours is $5 per lane-hour — enough to flip a $25 lane rental from 80% margin to 60% if you leave it out.

Keep Your Finances Organized From Day One

A shooting range is entertainment, retail, and compliance sharing one roof. Split the revenue, allocate the compliance, and recognize membership over time.

Beancount.io keeps each stream and each compliance cost as a version-controlled transaction, diff-able by the hour the lane was hot. Get started for free and make the next range hour cover its compliance, not just its electricity.
